Introduction
Hello all! My name is Seth and this is your daily devotion. Throughout our lives, one of the things we’re told over and over again is to look ahead. We should be thinking of tomorrow, beginning with the end in mind, planning for the future. It’s one of the hallmarks of success and human achievement.
Millionaires became rich by looking for what was next. Dreamers became some of the most influential and world changing people in history. Lives have been saved because someone thought ahead. Surely then the future is where our minds and hearts should stay.
This mindset is especially true for Christians as we know that God holds our future in His hands. It’s exciting to think about what He will do and what lies on the horizon. While it’s certainly true that we be hopeful and be prepared, I believe that our constant hunger for what’s next causes us to forget one of the most important aspects of who our God is.
Present is His Name
Exodus 3:13-14: Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Yahweh. I am. This is how God refers to Himself, but this isn’t just a title. This is God’s true name and verse 15 of the same chapter says that this is His name forever. So sacred is this name that the Hebrews would never say it. If not for this scripture, the true identity of the Lord would be lost.
What does His name have to do with this lesson? “I AM” is a present tense statement. His identity is rooted in the present. God is not the “I was” or the “I will be.” So yes, He’s forgiven your past and yes, He has your future planned out, but the God we serve isn’t the God of tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. He is the God of the day, the God of the moment. He is the God of right here, right now.
Conclusion/Prayer
If we’re constantly looking to our futures, we might miss that He is dwelling with us in this very moment. He is here. Therefore, let us celebrate every moment He gives us, every second we’re with Him. He has blessings for you in this moment. Don’t overlook them trying to get to what’s next. Let’s pray on this.
Lord Jesus, we thank you for all you have done and all you will do, but right now, we thank you especially for this moment with you. Every breath and heartbeat is an opportunity for praise. This is the day that you have made. We will rejoice and be glad in it and even if this is the last day before we’re called up, we praise you because after this life, there will be no past or future, but an eternal present spent with you. Keep us in your moment Lord. Amen.
That’s all I’ve got for you. Go in peace.
