Introduction

Hello all! My name is Seth and this is your daily devotion. If you’re listening to this and are Christian who owns a business or is a supervisor or manager, or is someone in any position of authority to direct people in their work, pay close attention to this message.

James 5:4-6-“4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

Are you treating your workers fairly? Are you even treating them like people?

The Hard Questions

If they work in a potentially hazardous environment, do they have effective protective equipment and are you striving to reduce these hazards or are you giving them a hard hat and a plastic apron and telling them that safety is their responsibility?

If the weather is bad, are you prioritizing their wellbeing or demanding that they drive on icy roads and through severe storms and then penalizing them if they refuse?

If their family is in need and they need to leave early or miss a day, are you accommodating and compassionate or do you deny their request and act as if you’re being inconvenienced?

Does their wage pay their bills, feed their families and make them feel like their work is valued or do they sweat every meager paycheck?

Your Responsibility As a Boss

You know the answers to these questions and if, for some reason, you don’t, you need to find out right now. If you’re a Christian, you know what you should be doing. You know that the way you’re treating your workers is wrong, evil even. Repent and work to change your ways or you will answer to God. For you know that the Lord is your boss, even as you are the boss of those beneath you. As harshly as you judge those who don’t meet your expectations, so harshly will God judge you when you don’t meet His.

Know this. All that you have has been given to you by God. He has trusted you with power and authority. Don’t think for even a moment that He can’t take all of it away from you. He doesn’t care how hard you think you’ve worked to “earn” your prosperity. He is no respector of persons.

Putting This Into Perspective

What if God decided to adopt your mindset and reward you based on your merit? If you showed Him your degrees, portfolios, bank account and list of accomplishments, would He receive you with pride?

What have you done for Him? He gave you a job. Are you doing it? Maybe you took too long on your break. Maybe you complain too much. Maybe you’re just lazy. Do you really want what you have coming to you, or do you prefer grace and mercy? Act accordingly to those who serve you and it’s a guarantee that you will receive the same.

Reassurance For The Good Boss/Prayer

Now, if you do all these things for your workers, God will surely reward you with even higher authority, because he blessed you with your current position and you had respect for it. You honor Him with your hands and your words. Be an example for other business owners and leaders. Show them that God’s way is good for all things, including business. Let’s pray on this.

Father God, you are the highest of authorities and you rule all things in fairness and truth. Soften the hearts of those You have put in powerful positions, those who hold the livelihoods of many in their hands. Remind them that they also have a boss and that you have the power to take away all you have given. For all things belong to you. Lift up the just leaders. Set them in a high place to be examples of your glory. Shower them with wealth, so that they may continue to invest in their people. For those who would make for just leaders, but do not have an opportunity, prepare them to do so and open the doors for them. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

That’s all I’ve got for you. Go in peace.
